Ingredients

From your pantry

  • 1 tspPure maple syrup
  • ¼ tspPure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinchFine sea salt

Utensils Fine sieve · Jar with lid · Fork

Instructions

  1. a spoon stirring a bowl — watercolour illustration

Sift the matcha into the jar first to break up the clumps. Clumps that survive the sieve will not dissolve later.

  2. a whisk in a bowl — watercolour illustration

Add the oats, chia seeds, salt, and vanilla, and whisk them together with a fork.

  3. liquid poured from a jug — watercolour illustration

Stream in the almond milk slowly while stirring so the matcha disperses evenly rather than settling.

  4. a spoon stirring a bowl — watercolour illustration

Fold in the Greek yogurt, shredded coconut, and maple syrup.

  5. a covered jar chilling — watercolour illustration

Seal and refrigerate 6-10 hours. Matcha's flavor fades faster than the other jars, so do not push past 12.

  6. a filled bowl with a spoon — watercolour illustration

    Top with the sliced almonds.

Why it works

Most matcha recipes assume you will drink it fresh. In an overnight preparation, matcha loses color and fresh flavor as it sits, and catechins can degrade once tea is wet; how much is lost in a sealed jar over one night has not been measured. Sealing the jar tightly and eating it within 10 hours is the cautious approach.

On the caffeine-plus-theanine pairing: in a 44-person trial, 97 mg of L-theanine with 40 mg of caffeine improved task-switching accuracy and self-reported alertness versus placebo, with no effect on several other cognitive tasks (Giesbrecht et al., 2010).

Macro detail: of the 8 g sugar, roughly 4 g is added; this is the least sweet of the six jars.
